The NYPD on Bikes

NYPD on wheels
Photo by myself at Madison and 43rd Street, in Midtown.

I would like to think these police officers were accompanying me on my ride uptown, but no.

The NYPD sometimes use motorcycles for highway patrol and fancy motorcades. With the stop and go traffic that we have, they probably become frustrated very, very quickly.

I took this photo from the back of a cab a little while ago on a sunnier day. It's been mostly grey and icky outside recently and super busy at the office.

les NYPD sont souvent assez sympathiques et permettent que l'on prennent en photos.

Hi:)
Great pictures from New York. I'm getting forward to getting there next week. It will be my first NY expiriense..
Mabey you can help me, im wondering of what jacket to bring. Do I need my down jacket, or is leather jackets and trench coats OK now? Do I need to bring glowes?
Is there snow in New York now? Thinking about choice off shoes :)

I hope ypu can help me.

Have a nice day :)

Hi Olivier
You're right, the NYPD is fine with taking photos, which is kind of surprising. They are usually very nice folks.

Hi Vart and welcome!
hm...we are going thru some weird weather. It has generally not been as cold as it usually is, and almost no snow. February is usually freezing.

So I would say, no down jacket, unless it is thin. I would bring a pair of long johns or a thermal undershirt instead. I am a big fan of the store Uniqlo, and they are great in a pinch. They have excellent warm underclothing and there are several stores in Midtown and Soho. They have warm womens' stockings, too.

Wear generally comfy shoes, since you'll do a lot of walking. No snow at all, though we've had some rain here and there. A jacket that is a little thinner than the down jacket will do, plus warm underwear, a hat, gloves and scarf.

If you forget something, there are vendors all over the place. And there are a TON of clothing sales going on right now. You are lucky! When the wind blows it can be cold but not insane. It's been hovering around 33F or 0C.

Have a wonderful time!!! If you have other questions, let me know.

Hi Bieb
Ha, I would love to hitch a ride with these guys. Must be super fun.

Bit like CHiPs but with fewer open roads and less sunshine. I find our police on motorcyles pretty approachable, same with the mounted section. People ask about their bikes or horses and they get used to people just saying hello.

Hi Kitty!
First of all I would like to say 'thank you' for your fotos full of life. I live in Moscow, but I like NYC very much and I feel happier when I look at your fotos and read your lines.
Next: as I could discern, one of the officers (front one) has a left-sided holster and the other - 'normal' right-sided one? If so and they are partners - quite interesting couple they are!
